Liposuction improves body shape by removing undesirable stubborn fat deposits in a specific area of the body. It is not considered a weight reduction procedure.
Weight gain following surgery can pose a problem. Therefore, in order to maintain your result, it is mandatory that you keep a stable weight. Many patients take it to the next level by modifying their activity and diet achieving even a better and longer lasting result.
Furthermore, liposuction has also some health benefits. Shedding weight has shown to improve the health in overweight patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Current literature shows that liposuction improves the blood lipid profile by reducing total cholesterol level and increased the HDL/LDL ratio. These factors combined, can certainly help reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with obesity.
Liposuction, regardless of the technique used, does diminish the fat cell population in the targeted area. It is known that liposuction does indeed permanently remove fat cells from your body, but fat can come back. Probably more in other areas than the areas that were targeted originally with liposuction.
So, when the patient gains a small amount of weight, this gained weight will be evenly distributed throughout the body and the change may not be visibly appreciated.
The problem arises when you gain more weight e.g. more that 10% of your body mass. Logically, the gained weight will store in other areas rather than the treated ones with the reduced cell population. As a result, other areas get bigger compared to the treated areas in these patients.
Also, fat cells are unique in a way that they can store more fat within the cell self, compared to other cells in your body. That’s why you can still gain weight in the treated areas also .
Bottomline, you need to look at your liposuction procedure as an investment in your body’s shape and health. You also need to keep a steady weight and continue working to lose more weight to optimize the outcome of your surgery.
This is better accomplished by following your surgeon’s instructions, watching your calorie intake, and exercising regularly.
